Introduction to The Series
It’s been almost two weeks since the tragic murder of Charlie Kirk, and I wanted to spend time with you, worship together, and see how much information about the event emerged, before choosing how to lead. The internal impulse to “say something” is strong, and the external pressure is sometimes stronger, which make it easy to say things that need to be backtracked later.
I first wish to remind you of things you already know: Jesus has risen; God is in charge; evil can take its best shot, but God’s kingdom will achieve ultimate victory. And this does – or should - change our perspective.
Second, my thoughts are not primarily directed toward our nation, but toward a family who won’t see their husband and dad again. This is where my thoughts always go when there’s a tragic death no matter how they died, or who caused it. The harder I think about this, and try to imagine the pain their families feel, the more humbly I grasp the tragic impact of evil. Sin and death cause God to grieve.
Next, I want to begin taking a long, slow walk through some of the issues this murder has raised. I can’t accomplish this in one shot, so I’ll be doing it through a series of essays that will run over the next few weeks. I humbly ask that you come along on this journey with me. I don’t expect you to agree with me on everything, but I want to challenge us to think as Godly as possible. And I want you to let me know when something is especially challenging.
