Practically Speaking: Divorce
Let's head back into the Gospel of Matthew to touch on some practical matters. This week: divorce. In my experience, there is probably no weightier subject in the church than marriage. Talking about marriage touches all the nerves, because it's the most elemental human relationship. Of course Satan would try to attack it! So we need to be ready.
**Note - between vacation and VBS, updating the website has been spotty. Sorry about that! We'll get back on track.
Message: It All Falls Apart
I originally intended this for last week, but this week, I promise, we'll conclude our series "Humility and Identity," wrestling with the heavy subjects of Romans 1. Last week we saw how idolatry is not just an ancient problem, but a human one. Pride will always lead us to serve creatures (usually ourselves) rather than the Creator, and pride never ends well. This week, we see pride and idolatry and a misplaced identity lead: to all the behaviors we know God hates.
This will be weighty stuff, and I want to equip you, and especially parents and grandparents, to address these issues graciously and Biblically.
First, I want to thank everyone for eagerly chipping in to help clean up the water in the basement last Sunday. So many of you just picked up to help. Nice job! (In case you didn't know him, Steve Krier, the Heartland District President, was manning one of the vacuums. If ministry doesn't work out, he has a future in the restoration business!)
Depending on the angle of the wind, we've had this problem during storms before: either in the northwest corner or the southeast corner of the church. Ron, Steve, Terry, Nate - all have looked at it and determined the first problem is the gutters: they are undersized and sagging. Water runs straight over them. We need to keep that volume of water from shooting down along the foundation.
So they are actively pursuing bids on this project. Since they also have targeted the parsonage roof for replacement soon, they will see if bundling the projects makes sense. It may also be that gutters do most, but not all, of the work, and some additional tiling needs to be done. But we know where to start! We'll let the church know when we have some bids.
Thanks again for your diligence in crisis, and your faithfulness to Big Springs,
Pastor Dave
Message: Humility: It's Not Just "Not Pride"
Read Ahead: Philippians 2
A change of plans - the stunning conclusion to Romans 1 will wait until next week. This message about the radical nature of Biblical humility slides in after last week's message about pride.
Message: Idolatry is a Symptom
We'll continue with our series "Humility and Identity," wrestling with the heavy subjects of Romans 1. Last week we wrestled with the question: "Can I choose my own identity?" The Biblical answer: Yes! You can choose to be a servant of Christ Jesus, allowing Him to define who you are, and following Him wherever He goes. This week we'll hit verses 16-25: the root cause of idolatry (hint, it's not good woodworking skills, and it's not ancient history).
This will be weighty stuff, and I want to equip you, and especially parents and grandparents, to address these issues graciously and Biblically.
Message: A Christian Is a Servant of Jesus
This week we being a series called "Humility and Identity," wrestling with the heavy subjects of Romans 1. Through it, we'll deal with questions like "Can I really choose my own identity?" "Can I choose how much of my life belongs to God?" "Where do 'sins' come from?" This will be weighty stuff, and I want to equip you, and especially parents and grandparents, to address these issues graciously and Biblically.

Message: The High Cost of a Free Salvation
Read Ahead: Philippians 2:1-11
The last in our series on evangelism and missions, this week I'll talk about the Christian life. The moment of belief is the necessary first step - it's what brings us salvation. But it's too easy to forget about the next part: to take up the cross, and follow Jesus. Now that I believe in Jesus, what does it mean to follow Him?

As we did in Sunday School last week, please be praying this week that God would call people to know Him, trust Jesus, and welcome His Spirit through the Gideons' work in our region.
